5 ingredients for studying theology

GDip student Hywel George shares his five essential ‘ingredients’ for studying theology with us!

1) Church

It’s possible to complete the GDip without being part of church life, but this would be a fatal mistake. To really get the most out of the course you need to live and breathe its content where it lives – in the church. This is where you will see biblical studies, mission, pastoring, theology and church history literally come alive and benefit real lives, including yours!

2) Bible

It’s possible to complete the GDip without reading loads of the Bible, but this would be a huge bungle. To actually benefit from the course, you must complete it in a humble posture, under the word of Christ. Soak yourself in His word and submit to it as a priority, then the course will fit around that solid foundation, in the right place.

3) Prayer

It’s possible to complete the GDip without constant prayer but this would be a tremendous waste. To ensure the course swells your heart with your head, talk to our Father about it all the time. Make sure to pray the content into your heart with your coursemates and the Spirit will happily lead you into all truth.

4) Routine

It’s possible to complete the GDip without doing all the reading and hard work. You might scrape a pass, but you would also be a failure! Union is bursting with resources to take advantage of; get a good routine and stick to it, then you can make the most of them. Find what works for you. I planned the reading weekly and tried to speak with coursemates about it leading up to study days.

5) Holy Living

It’s possible to complete the GDip without living a life which is obedient to Christ but this would be hypocrisy. It’s impossible to truly proceed in spiritual maturity without holy living (1 Cor 3:1-3). For the GDip to truly benefit you, commit yourself to Christian living in the Church for the glory of Jesus; this is the context in which Christians grow from glory to glory.
