Donald Fairbairn to be Professor of Historical and Systematic Theology and Dean of Newton House

Dr. Donald Fairbairn will join the teaching faculty at Union School of Theology from September 2023.

He will teach in historical and systematic theology on a part-time basis, both spending time on campus in the UK and teaching online. He will also serve as the new Dean of Newton House, Oxford.

Donald is a preeminent historical theologian and a renowned authority on the early church. He currently serves as the Robert E. Cooley Professor of Early Christianity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary where he has taught since 2010. His many publications include Life in the Trinity: An Introduction to Theology with the Help of the Church Fathers and Grace and Christology in the Early Church.

Michael Reeves, Union’s President and Professor of Theology, said, ‘It is a joy to have someone of Donald’s academic stature and expertise joining our team, but more still to discover a shared heartbeat. We share a deep love for the church, a strong desire to raise up and nurture leaders, and a passion for global mission. He is an extraordinarily good fit for Union and will be an outstanding asset.’

Donald Fairbairn said, ‘For over a decade Michael Reeves and Daniel Hames have been among my greatest theological kindred spirits, and I have followed UST’s ministry with interest. It is a delight to join an institution so committed to fostering believers’ fellowship with the Lord as a sharing in the Father’s love for his Son. I look forward to our ministry together.’
