Tom Gledhill (1942 – 2020)

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Dr Tom Gledhill.

Tom Gledhill served as a member of the teaching staff at Union School of Theology when it was known as ETCW. He was appointed in 1993 and continued until his retirement in 2006.

Tom came to serve at the School having returned to Britain from work overseas. Both he and his wife had been In Africa for many years, Tom teaching at various theological institutions.

Tom’s teaching duties at the School were primarily New Testament Greek, as well as some Old Testament and Hebrew. He loved the biblical languages and taught several generations of students with competence and with dedication.

His scholarship was seen in his Bible Speaks Today commentary on the Song of Songs which was published during his time at the School. He had also done considerable work on the book of Esther, with a view to publication, but this never saw the light of day.

He combined a deep-rooted faith with an enquiring mind, unafraid to ask probing questions. His wry humour was often evident.

Following retirement, Tom lived latterly in Wantage near Oxford, and continued to be an avid reader of scholarly works even as his health deteriorated.

We extend our sympathies to his widow, Serena, and to their children, Sheona and Stephen and their loved ones. With them, we mourn his loss and cherish his memory. We give thanks to God for his life and ministry with us.
