Theology where you need it: 5 reasons to study on our flexible BA

With so many options for theological study available, it can be daunting to know where to start.

Should I study on-campus or at distance? Will an academic theology course equip me practically for ministry? How do I balance studying with my existing family and work commitments? These are some of the many questions you might be asking as you weigh up whether a theology degree is right for you.

If you’ve pondered any of these questions, our BA (Hons) could be the perfect solution. Here’s why:

  1. You don’t have to leave home (but you can if you want!)

We’d love you to join us on our residential campus for the whole programme, but you can also choose to take the BA through a flexible blend of campus and community-focused online learning.

You have the choice to decide when you want to study on campus or online, as long as you complete at least 4 weeks in each academic year on campus (or 2 weeks if studying part-time). Our purpose-built Zoom classrooms mean that those studying via this blended approach can interact in live lectures, seminars and workshops in the same way as those on campus.

  2. Benefit from world-class theological teaching

With world-renowned faculty including Michael Reeves and Robert Letham, the BA gives you the opportunity to learn from leading evangelical theologians and scholars.

More than that, Union is a family, bringing together staff and students in a tight-knit community. One BA graduate put it this way: “It isn’t just ‘staff’ and ‘students’, it’s a family. We do things together, and there is that real sense of being one family.”

  3. Study alongside your existing commitments

We’ve worked hard to make studying on the BA as accessible as possible so that you can receive theological education wherever and whenever you need it.

With options to study full-time over 3 years or part-time in up to 6 years, the programme gives you the flexibility to fit your studies around existing ministry or work commitments, as well as life and family responsibilities.

  4. Learn in gospel-hearted community

Theological formation doesn’t happen in a vacuum, but in community with others through learning together, encouraging and challenging one another in the pursuit of Christ.

Whether you learn on-campus or study at a distance, you’ll benefit from the opportunity to form new friendships and learn alongside others in gospel-hearted community. Even those studying off-campus are able to interact in live lectures, seminars and workshops through our purpose-built Zoom classrooms.

  5. Be immersed in theology you can trust

In a world where so many Christians are drifting from the gospel and afraid to lift the banner of Christ, it’s as important as ever that godly men and women are immersed in Biblically faithful, gospel-hearted theological teaching.

The BA (Hons) reflects UST’s Evangelical and Reformed distinctives, with an emphasis on studying the Bible, church history, systematic theology, and pastoral and preaching theology - meaning you’ll receive a theological education you can trust to prepare you for a lifetime of gospel ministry.
